De Asis, Dumagpi shine

JOHN Franz De Asis and Aime Dumagpi emerged as the champion in the 2021 Philippine Sports Commission-Pilipinas Para Games Online Chess Competition recently.

De Asis, a native of Iloilo City, finished with 5.5 points on five wins and one draw in the six-round tournament in the P1-Men (Physically Impaired) category.

The win was worth for P30,000.

De Asis won over No 23 seed Apollo Cabilan in the first round, No. 18 Sean Mervick Tiu in the second round, No. 10 Rogelio Clemente in the third, No. 4 Sol Tiamzon in the fourth round and N. 9 Ronnie Villa in the fifth round.

He drew the sixth and final round with eventual second placer Eric Abanco of Bacolod City, who finished with five points

Jordaine Tupaz of Talisay City also finished with five points, but settled for third place due to inferior tiebreak.

Equally impressive was Aime Dumagpi, who defeated Clarence Oreña twice to claim the P1-Women’s title.

Other winners were Geronimo Torres in B1-Men (Totally Blind), Yoland Pespes in B1-Women, Mark Christian Evangelista in B2-Men (Visually Impaired), and Siera Mae Requiron in B2-Women.

Tournament arbiter James Infiesto said the three-day competition is aimed as at strengthening the grassroots program in the sport for people with disabilities.

The event was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
