Regional cooperation among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is very important in order to propel food security in the region.

This was stressed by Agriculture Department Secretary William Dar during the recently-held Global Business Forum-ASEAN.

Dar noted that with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the international expansion and food security in various countries including the Philippines, are being hampered.

He particularly noted that in attempting to protect their own food security, many countries also established trade restrictions and chokepoints in the global food supply.

“Adding more reasons to worry are concerns on rising global population, malleable demand landscape for food, and contentious climate change policies and environmental regulations related to food security,” Dar said.

He added that the differences in each country’s stances and policies further test diplomatic ties and unified action on global food security matters.

To rise above these challenges, Dar highlighted the need for unity and cooperation among ASEAN member-nations in sustaining food security.

He noted that this is best achieved by “recognizing the social and cultural connections constituting their organic links to each other.”

The member-nations, as per the agriculture chief, should also take into consideration the economic sectors, migrant workers’ welfare and social protections, proactive engagement of embassies with transnational populations and entities, and other social factors that influence business and trade relationships among nations.
