Danaos order tightened security in Lamitan City
PHILIPPINE National Police Officer-in-Charge (PNP-OIC), Lieutenant General Vicente D. Danao Jr. has ordered tightened security measures in Lamitan City, Basilan where there has been a tension in the aftermath of the killing of the father of the doctor involved in the deadly Ateneo gun attack last July 24.
The top cop assured the public that more uniformed policemen have been deployed in the city after two still unidentified men on Friday shot to death the father of Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, the confessed killer of ex-Lamitan City Mayor Rosita Furigay, and two others inside the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City.
“We adhered to the mandate of Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and beefed up border controls to halt the possible escape of the gunmen,” Danao said.
According to the top cop, PNP personnel have been deployed in checkpoints in strategic parts of the city to monitor suspected persons attempting to pass through.
Danao added that it is vital to arrest the perpetrators to deepen the investigation amid many assumptions that tend to link the incident to last Sunday’s shooting at the ADMU.
“Let the probe take its course. We need concrete proof to establish the motive behind the killing of Mr. Rolando Yumol,” he said.
The PNP has also asked the full cooperation of the public in identifying and establishing the motive of the killers who attacked the victim just hours after his son was indicted for multiple murders and double frustrated murder in connection with the deadly Ateneo de Manila University gun attacks.
The Ateneo killer’s father Rolando, a 69-year old retired officer of the defunct Philippine Constabulary was attacked by at least two unidentified suspects outside a store in Barangay Maligaya around 6:30 a.m. last Friday.
He suffered several gunshot wounds in the body and was taken to the Lamitan District Hospital where an attending physician declared him dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, the PNP said it was ‘premature’ to link the Lamitan City attack to the crime committed by the victim’s son.
“Sa ngayon, premature po tayo na mag-speculate po kung ito nga ay may kinalaman doon sa nangyaring pamamaril sa Ateneo dahil hanggang ngayon ay nangangalap pa po ng ebidensya iyong ating mga pulis po doon sa area,” said PNP spokesperson, Colonel Jean Fajardo.
The younger Yumol confessed to killing former Lamitan City Mayor Rosita Furigay, her executive assistant Victor Capistrano and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiola last July 24 in an attack that marred the Ateneo College of Law graduation rites at the Ateneo campus.
Furigay’s daughter, Hannah Rose Marian, one of those about to graduate and a mother of another graduating student were also seriously wounded in the attack.
Members of the Quezon City Police District under Brigadier General Remus B. Medina arrested the fleeing suspect shortly after the incident. Recovered from his possession were two unlicensed guns.
The QCPD has filed additional charges for car theft, illegal possession of firearms under Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013 and malicious mischief against the suspect before the Q.C. Prosecutor’s Office.
The Ateneo gunman has been transferred by the QCPD to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
