NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office ( NCRPO) director, Major General Vicente D. Danao Jr. yesterday commended two members of the Manila Police District who were injured by a drunken motorcycle rider as they were performing their peacekeeping duties outside Quiapo Church in Manila on Saturday.

The NCRPO chief also gave Police Corporals Benjamin de Guzman and Ronnel Yambao, both members of the MPD Station 3 P20,000 each for their hospitalization and other medical expenses.

The cash assistance was presented to the two wounded Manila policemen by the NCRPO Regional Executive Senior Police Officer and the MPD District Executive Senior Police Officer who were sent by Maj. Gen. Danao to the Chinese General Hospital where the two are presently confined.

According to MPD director, Brigadier Gen. Leo M. Francisco, the two were policemen were manning a chokepoint at the vicinity of Plaza Miranda when the motorbike being driven by 35-year old Ronald Asquivel hit them.

Officers present at the scene said that the motorcycle driver was reeking with liquor when he rammed the two policemen who were among those sent to Quiapo to ensure strict compliance to health protocols during the Feast of Black Nazarene.

Both officers suffered contusions in their bodies and broken ribs although they were listed in stable condition and need to stay at the hospital for further examination and treatment.

The motorcycle driver was traveling at the southbound lane of Quezon Boulevard in Quiapo early morning Saturday when he figured in the accident. He was arrested and is now facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and violation of the anti-drunk driving act of 201, said Francisco.

The man’s motorbike was impounded at the MPD Traffic Enforcement Unit headquarters.
