Danao: 188 gun ban violators collared by NCRPO so dar
A TOTAL of 188 gun ban violators in Metro Manila have been arrested since the National Capital Region Police Office las January 9 started the strict enforcement of the prohibition on the unauthorized carrying of firearms and other deadly weapons in the metropolis, NCRPO director, Major General Vicente D. Danao Jr. said on Sunday.
The NCRPO so far has accounted for the biggest number of gun ban violators in the country as Philippine National Police records showed that from January 9 to yesterday, a total of 497 offenders have been apprehended nationwide, a report to PNP chief, General Dionardo B. Carlos said.
Gen. Carlos has ordered the strict implementation of the gun ban and had told his men to arrest violators including law enforcement agents who will be found carrying their guns in public while in civilian clothes and not in the official performance of duty.
Since last January 9, a total of 39,881 checkpoints have been conducted by the police across the country.
In Metro Manila, Maj. Gen. Danao said they have put up 4,935 Comelec-supervised checkpoints. He said that officers manning those checkpoints have arrested 15 gun ban violators while the 173 others were apprehended during police patrols/responses and conduct of Oplan:Sita or gun checks.
Danao said recovered from the suspects were 72 firearms and 17 home-made guns including ‘sumpak’ and ‘paltik’ as well as gun replicas and 379 other deadly weapons.
“Tuloy-tuloy lamang po ang ating pagsasagawa ng mga checkpoint at iba pang police operation upang masigurong maipapatupad ng tama ng election gun ban, ito ay bilang paghahanda na rin sa nalalapit na National at Local Elections 2022 nitong darating na Mayo,” the official said.
Danao called on the public to fully cooperate with their ongoing security measures and conduct of checkpoints to ensure a peaceful and orderly May 9 polls amid the new normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
