Creamline sustains good form in PVL
CREAMLINE extend its winning streak to three after repulsing a hard-fighting Galeries Tower side, 27-25, 26-28, 29-27, 25-19, in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Philsports Arena yesterday.
The Cool Smashers found the Highrisers a tough nut to crack in the first three sets that were all extended before imposing their will in the fourth to move up to 3-1 in Pool A.
“Siyempre, No. 1 masaya kami. Happy naman kami at nakuha namin kahit hindi ganoon kadali. Lahat naman ng team, talagang lumalaban. So pinaghandaan namin,” said Creamline coach Sherwin Meneses.
Earlier, Farm Fresh elevated its game, shutting down Nxled, 25-16, 25-15, 25-17, to bolster their bid for a Top 3 finish in Pool A.
Bernadeth Pons reset her PVL career high with a 26-point performance, including three blocks and two service aces and had 17 receptions to back up American Erica Staunton, who had 29 points, including three blocks, and nine digs.
Fil-Canadian libero Aleiah Torres, Creamline’s first round overall pick in the PVL Rookie Draft, finally debuted and got the feel of the Philippine game, as the Toronto native played in all four sets and recorded seven receptions.
“It has been really good. I think I had a lots of fun. I just want to bring a lots of good energy and good vibes today. I just had a lot of fun, play carefree. It’s a good thing we won today,” Torres said.
Kyla Atienza, the Cool Smashers’ starting libero, had 18 receptions and 15 digs.
Colombia’s Yeny Murillo went 21-of-35 kills to finish with 22 points and collected four digs while Trisha Tubu hammered 16-of-28 attacks for the Foxies.
With a 2-2 card, Farm Fresh posted its first winning streak of the conference, as it hopes to wrap up the first round of the preliminaries against PLDT on Thursday – a make-up of the postponed July 25 match due to inclement weather – on a winning note.
The Foxies hopes to assure themselves of being the one of the top three teams will compete against the bottom three sides in Pool B in the next stage for spots in the quarterfinals.
“That win in our last game (against Galeries Tower) was a huge boost because we carried the energy into this match and never let it drop,” said Tubu, who also noted Farm Fresh’s steady improvement in teamwork and camaraderie.
“It feels so good to see the teamwork building up. We help each other, even those on the bench contribute in one way or another,” she added.
The Chameleons, who drew a 12-point, 12-reception outing from Chiara Permentilla, fell to 1-3 in their bracket and will next play the Cool Smashers.
The Highrisers, starring Thai Sutadta Chuewulim’s 23-point, 11-dig effort, stumbled to a fourth consecutive defeat.
