THE Navotas City Regional Trial Court has convicted a policeman for two counts of murder over the 2017 deaths of two teenagers slain at the height of the Duterte administration’s bloody war on drugs.

Sentenced by Branch 287 to suffer a penalty of reclusion perpetua without eligibility of parole was Police Officer 1 Jefrey Sumbo Perez.

He was likewise ordered to pay the families of teenagers Carlo Angelo Arnaiz and Reynaldo “Kulot” de Guzman of damages and compensation.

The killing of Arnaiz, a 19-year-old former student of the University of the Philippines, and the gruesome murder of De Guzman, whose body was fished out of a creek in Nueve Ecija province, sparked widespread condemnation of former president Duterte’s violent drug war.

The killings happened barely two weeks after 17-year-old Kian Lloyd delos Santos was slain by policemen during a supposed anti-drug operation also in Caloocan.
