Comelec, Cavite police enforce gun ban in Bacoor

Ahead of barangay plebiscite

BACOOR CITY, Cavite – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Cavite police have enforced a “gun ban” at midnight, Wednesday and will end on August 5, 2023, as part of the security preparations for the forthcoming plebiscite for the proposed merging and renaming of its barangays on July 29.

Based on Resolution No. 10917, the Comelec said a plebiscite will be held based on the Bacoor City Ordinance No. 275-2023, which aims to trim the number of barangays from 49 to 23.

Based on the said ordinance, 44 barangays will be merged and renamed into 18 villages. Five barangays are also set to be renamed.

During the plebiscite period, bearing, carrying, or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons; organizations or maintenance of strike forces; suspension of local elective officials; and transfer or detail of officers and employees in the civil service are prohibited.

Villages subject to be merged and renamed are Sineguelasan, Banalo and Alima for Sinbanali, Tabing Dagat, Camposanto and Daang Bukid as Barangay Poblacion; Kaingen and Digman at Barangay Kaingen Digman, Mabolo 1, 2 and 3 as Mabolo, Salinas 2, 3 and 4 as Salinas 2.

Maliksi 2 and 3 as Maliksi 2; Zapote 1 and 2 for Zapote 1; Zapote 3 and 4 as Zapote 2; Talaba 1, 3, and 7 as Talaba 1; Talaba 4, 5, and 6 as Talaba 3; Aniban 1, 3, and 5 as Aniban 1; Aniban 2 and 4 as Aniban 2; Mambog 2 and 5 as Mambog 2; Niog 1, 2, and 3 as Niog; Ligas 1 and 2 as Ligas 1; Real 1 and 2 as Barangay Real; P.F. Espiritu 2 and 3 as P.F. Espiritu 2; Bgy. P.F. Espiritu 5 and 6 as P.F. Espiritu 4.

Barangays subject to renamed are Zapote 6 to Zapote 3; Ligas 3 to Ligas 2; P.F. Espiritu 4 to P.F. Espiritu 3; P.F. Espiritu 7 to P.F. Espiritu 5; and P.F. Espiritu 8 to P.F. Espiritu 6.

Bacoor police have placed checkpoints in strategic areas in the locality together with Comelec.

According to the poll body, the information and campaign period is set from June 28 to July 27.

On plebiscite day, voting is set from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in designated polling places.

During the information and campaign period, it is prohibited to remove, destroy, or tamper lawful plebiscite propaganda while holding barangay assemblies, or “pulong-pulong” are encouraged.

On the eve of the plebiscite day, a liquor ban will be implemented; providing or accepting free transportation, food, drinks, and other things of value is not allowed.

Bacoor City has 294,496 registered voters in the 2022 elections.

If the “Yes” vote wins, the barangays will be reduced to 50 from 73 villages.

According to Police Colonel Christopher Olazo, provincial director of the Cavite Police Provincial Office, “We have two ongoing plebiscites na po, Carmona and Bacoor; kindly observe the Comelec guidelines, and ready your car registration and driver’s license sa mga checkpoints po, avoid bringing guns in this areas po.”
