Cold storage worker buried under meat, killed
A STORAGE worker died when he was buried under the semi-defrost meat, which collapsed inside a cold storage processing plant Wednesday before dawn in Navotas City.
Teopilo Tapic, 40, of Barangay Catmon, Malabon City, was rushed by his co-workers to Tondo Medical Center after his body was retrieved from the debris but was pronounced dead upon arrival by the attending physician.
Report reaching the office of Navotas Police Chief P/Col. Dexter Ollaging showed that while the victim and his co-worker Rex Fuentes were busy transferring defrosted meat on the crates at around 12:30 a.m inside Thawing Storage at VVS Cold Storage and Processing Plant located at Bgy. NBBS-Proper when stacks of semi-defrost meat beside them suddenly collapsed.
The victim, who was caught by surprise, failed to run for safety, while Fuentes managed to scamper and immediately shouted for help when he saw his co-worker buried under the collapsed semi-defrost meat.
Other workers responded and helped each other in retrieving the victim’s body from the rubble, and after more than an hour, they were able to extract his body and immediately rushed to the nearest hospital.
The victim’s wife and sister agreed to subject the victim to an autopsy examination to determine the cause of his death.
