CIGNAL put up a masterclass in sweeping Criss Cross, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24, to rule the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference at the Philsports Arena on Sunday night.

Relying on their vast experience and unparalleled poise under pressure, the HD Spikers foiled the King Crunchers bid to avenge their previous Finals defeat.

What makes this victory even more remarkable is the resilience of Cignal’s system despite the exodus of several key players to Criss Cross.

Former HD Spikers now forming the core of the King Crunchers had carried their squad through a sweeping performance in the semis round, giving them an aura of invincibility entering the finals.

Yet, Cignal’s championship DNA shone through when it mattered most, with veterans stepping up and younger players rising to the occasion.
“Consistency was key throughout the game. We addressed all the issues we faced in past games, even in training,” said HD Spikers coach Dexter Clamor.

Cignal dismantled Criss Cross in the Open Conference Finals last May but was in danger of getting denied of a season sweep of championships after the King Crunchers were dominant against the HD Spikers in the semifinals.

For Louie Ramirez, who returned to Cignal after winning two NCAA titles for University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, the victory was a form of redemption bowing to Criss Cross.

“I’m really happy, especially considering what we went through,” said Ramirez, who was named the Finals MVP after logging 24 points on 21-of-38 kills and three blocks that went along with 12 receptions in the clincher. “I just went all out and played well.”

He credited his strong connection with playmaker Owa Retamar for their success, saying: “The adjustments we made, especially with Owa, made sure they couldn’t read us.”

Jude Garcia, the conference MVP, had 18 points and eight receptions to lead the King Crunchers.
