Bottle of liquor costs P20K, can of beer sells at P1K

BUREAU of Corrections (BuCor) officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang Jr. on Wednesday bared the insane pricing of cigarette and liquor in prison.

Interviewed over radio station DZBB, Catapang divulged that a stick of cigarette is being sold in prison for P400, while the whole pack of 20s can reach an insanely overpriced P1, 500.

A ream of cigarette can be bought at P15, 000, disclosed Catapang, who replaced suspended BuCor chief Gerald Bantag.

A bottle of popular Scotch whisky Black Label is priced between P15,000 to P20, 000, while canned beers at P1, 000 each.

The BuCor prison facilities are: The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City, Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Oriental Mindoro, New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa;

The Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) in Davao del Norte, and Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Southern Leyte.

Last month, prison officers seized thousands of beer-in-cans, narcotics, improvised weapons, and other prohibited items during “Oplan Galugad” operation at the NBP Maximum Security Compound in Muntinlupa City.

“Baka malasing ka pag nalaman mo ang presyo (ng beer) –P1,000 isa,” Catapang said.
