A TOP political instructor of the New People’s Army (NPA) wanted for murder, arson and exploitation of children in armed conflict is now in jail after being arrested during an operation in Zamboanga City last week, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Dionardo B. Carlos said yesterday.

The top cop said that 58-year old Romanito Sumasay alias ‘Kumander Guzman’ is a known member of the NPA’s Kalaw Group operating in Zamboanga peninsula and listed as the top most wanted person in Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur prior to his arrest.

Members of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) under Major Gen. Albert Ignatius D. Ferro and the Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9) headed by Brigadier Gen. Franco P. Simbori arrested the suspect, Carlos said.

The PNP chief said the suspect is the subject of a warrant of arrest for frustrated homicide and arson issued by Judge Felix Rodriguez of the Pagadian City Regional Trial Court Branch 18 and violation of Republic Act 11188 or the Special Protection of Children in Armed Conflict issued by Judge Analyn Costanilla of the Aurora, Zamboanga Sibugay RTC Branch 30.

“This accomplishment is a strong indication that our personnel on the ground are determined to arrest lawbreakers and criminals despite our ongoing relief and rescue operations due to Typhoon Odette,” Carlos said.
