CIDG nabs Maguindanao Massacre suspect

AGENTS of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) on Wednesday afternoon captured another elusive suspect in the infamous Maguindanao Massacre that left 43 dead on November 23, 2009, PNP-CIDG Director Major General Eliseo DC Cruz announced yesterday.

The official said that Datu Harris Ampatuan, the chairman of Barangay Tuayan in Datu Hoffer, Maguindanao was arrested at the BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) Compound in Cotabato City 5:30 p.m. Wednesday by members of the CIDG Maguindanao Provincial Field Unit.

Maj. Gen. Cruz said that the member of the Ampatuan clan is one of the accused in the massacre ordered arrested by Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 on January 19, 2021.

The suspects are facing non-bailable charges for 43 counts of murder.

Cruz said that the village chief is now being held at the CIDG BARMM office for documentation pending his presentation to court for issuance of official jail commitment order.

A P300,000 monetary reward was also offered by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for the arrest of the suspect, he added.
