THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is set to conduct a parallel probe into the killing of lawyer Juan Macababbad last Wednesday who was shot and killed by still unidentified gunmen in South Cotabato.

“CHR strongly denounces this latest killing of another agent of law and an active defender of people’s rights and interest. The string of attacks against members of the legal profession remains unrelenting,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia said over the weekend.

Macababbad was vice-chairperson of the Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (UPLM) in Mindanao.

Prior to his murder, Macababbad was representing farmers, fisherfolk, victims of extra-judicial killings, and informal settlers.

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed him in Surallah town on Wednesday afternoon.

Macababbad sustained fatal gunshot wounds in his head and body.

Initial report said two riding in tandem gunmen arrived in front of Macababbad’s residence in Barangay Poblacion at 5 p.m. and called for the lawyer.

As the lawyer was opening the gate, he was treacherously shot by the suspects who hurriedly fled the scene.

Macababbad was rushed to the Javelosa Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
