FORMER Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) to run for the Senate.

Cayetano said he abandoned his earlier plan to run for the presidency, lamenting the highly-divisive political atmosphere in the country.

“As I embark on the journey back to the Senate, I bring with me the knowledge and experience from decade of service as councilor, vice mayor, congressman, senator, and Foreign Affairs Secretary. I am grateful to God and to our people for the opportunity to serve in different capacities, and I look forward to more years of working with all of you for the future of our country,” Cayetano told the media in a press conference held at the Senator Rene “Compañero” Cayetano Science and Technology High School in Taguig City.

Cayetano thanked God for giving him the opportunity to serve in the House of Representatives as Speaker and worked for the passage of crucial legislation, including Bayanihan 1 and 2 to fight the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic.

“I am particularly thankful to the Lord enabling me to serve as House Speaker. It came at an opportune time as we were able to offer to the nation two laws – Bayanihan 1 and 2 – that have been instrumental in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cayetano said.

“As we continue to battle this health crisis, my colleagues and I are working hard to craft an economic recovery plan that will span not just one year, as has been the usual practice, but five years – enough to see the Philippines well into recovery,” Cayetano added.
