PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief General Dionardo B. Carlos on Saturday ordered a thorough investigation into an incident in San Pascual, Masbate where a drunken man armed with a bladed weapon was shot and killed by a policeman he reportedly tried to attack.

“Let the investigation take its due course. We appeal to the public to refrain from making conclusions on the incident until the final report and recommendations are done,” Gen. Carlos said.

A Police Regional Office 5 (PRO5) report said that a drunken man identified as Salvador delos Reyes was creating trouble in Sitio Luksuhon in Bgy. Pinamasingan in San Pascual municipality around 1:35 p.m. Thursday when local policemen arrived and asked him to peacefully yield.

PRO5 Director Brig. Gen. Jonnel C. Estomo said that members of the San Pascual Municipal Police Station (MPS) rushed to the site after getting a call for assistance from Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) Chief Victor Patropez.

When the officers identified as Staff Sergeant McDonald Casi and Corporals James Earl Sabater, and Martin Osabel arrived at the scene, they saw the intoxicated delos Reyes armed with a bladed weapon while creating trouble.

The policemen were trying to pacify delos Reyes when the latter reportedly tried to attack them prompting SSgt. Casi to shoot in self-defense. As a result, the man died on the spot.

Recovered at the scene were the man’s 14-inch long knife and nine spent caliber 9mm casings.

The body of the slain man was taken to the San Pascual Regional Health Unit for an autopsy, said Brig. Gen. Estomo.
