Carlo remembers Julia as a child actress
CARLO Aquino says he enjoyed working with Julia Barretto for the first time in Viva’s romantic-drama, “Expensive Candy”, that will be shown in cinemas nationwide starting September 14. He plays Toto, a high school teacher who is a male virgin and when his students chide him about this, he goes to the place called Area in Angeles City where hookers ply their trade for him to experience sex for the first time.
It is there that he meets Julia as Candy, a beautiful and sultry streetwalker who would changed his life after he hires her and goes to bed with her. He says that at first, he could not interact with Julia like someone who has the hots for her, since he first saw her as a child actress at ABS-CBN. Carlo is actually 11 years older than Julia as he is 36 and Julia is only 25.
“Noong una ko siyang makilala, si Juju ang tawag sa kanya kasi nga bata pa lang siya,” he says. “Who knows na darating ang panahon na magiging magkapareha pala kami. So in the movie, I have to look at her in a different light. Sabi nga ng director naming si JP Laxamana, dapat, ang tingin ko sa kanya, ‘yung may desire, may malisya, ganun.”
But he takes his hat off to Julia as she’s so good in her role as a brazen hooker who names her price everytime he goes out with her.
“Pataas nang pataas ang presyo niya tuwing kukunin ko siya, kaya nga ‘Expensive Candy’ ang title ng movie. She’s also good in drama. Meron kaming mahabang confrontation scene and she’s very convincing. Talagang humanga ako sa kanyang pagiging aktres.”
He adds that Julia’s role is really very demanding. “Mahirap ‘yung role niya, kasi may dance sequences pa siya, but she pulled it off seamlessly, Ang ganda ng pagkakagawa niya kasi she just totally let go of all her inhibitions at niyakap niya nang buong-buo ang role ni Candy, the streetwalker. Pasok na pasok talaga siya and I’m so proud of her work in this movie.”
So what is the message that “Expensive Candy” will leave to the audience? “Dapat, ang love, hindi judgmental. Ako, teacher dito na nagmahal sa isang pokpok and siempre, our society looks down on that kind of relationship. Kung mahal mo talaga ang isang tao, dapat, ipaglaban mo. Dito, ‘yung love ko for her inspired me, motivated me to work very hard para masundan ko yung pagiging very expensive ni Candy. So, panoorin nyo yung aming journey ni Julia as Toto and Candy in ‘Expensive Candy’ as we really did our best for you to enjoy it.”
Carlos remains to be really busy as, aside from “Expensive Candy” with Viva, he has also just finished a new movie entitled “Seasons” with Lovi Poe for Regal Entertainment.
