Canlaon City placed under a state of calamity
CANLAON City in Negros Oriental on Tuesday was placed under a state of calamity following the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Monday night.
In a special session, the City Council adopted the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) recommendation for a state of calamity as the eruption affected several residents in the city and neighboring areas.
“Being an agricultural city, said natural calamity greatly affects the economic living condition of the people, specifically the farmers, thus, there is a need for the local government to exert necessary measures to address and cushion the impact of the volcanic eruption,” the City Council resolution stated.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas urged the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to impose a price freeze on commodities to prevent businesses from taking advantage of the situation.
Philippine Red Cross (PRC) chairman and CEO Richard Gordon has ordered water tankers, food trucks and other essential facilities on standby for people evacuating from Mt. Kanlaon.
Gordon met with PRC staff via Zoom late Monday night to check on essential supplies to be sent to evacuees if the eruption continues.
Around 8,000 people living near the volcano will be affected in the event of a full eruption. Jane Eleda and Arlene Rivera
