Calamba survives Paete in overtime thriller

CALAMBA City-Alta CalamBAGO made it six wins in a row by beating Paete- PGFlex, 83-81, in overtime to take the solo lead even as Biñan City- Vice Gel shocked erstwhile unbeaten San Pedro City-AMB, 73-67, in the 2022 National Basketball League (NBL) Basketball Championship at the National University Inspire Sports Academy Center in Calamba City, Laguna.

The Mayor Roseller H. Rizal-supported Alta CalamBAGO relied on John Lester Maurillo’s game-winner in the last two seconds to escape with the win in this nine-team tournament organized by BAP Region 4 Head Leonardo “Ding” Andres.

Maurillo’s game winner came after former PBA player Raffy Reyes nailed a jumper to tie the score at 81-all with 16 seconds left.

Shawn Dominic Algire topscored with 20 points for Alta CalamBAGO of coach Francis Natividad and consultant Michael Sydiangco.

Jan Henrick Natividad added 16 points, Jonathan Ballon had 12 points and Maurillo contributed 10 points.

Reyes topscored with 20 points for the PGFlex- supported Paete team of coach Johny Tam and team manager Nelson Guevarra.

Biñan City rode on Michael Roque, Allan Mangahas and Alexander Villacorta in pulling the rug from under San Pedro-AMB to join their victim in second to third places with five wins in six outings.

Roque finished with 23 points, Mangahas had 12 points and Villacorta contributed 11 points for Binan City-Vice Gel.

Seraj Elmejerab and Daniel Manuel Austria carried the fight for San Pedro City- AMB with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

In the other games, San Pedro City-Leads Agri downed Santa Rosa City, 99-86 and Sto Tomas City, Batangas-Mr. Cow defeated Cabuyao City-DenHa Tigers, 75-74.

San Pedro City-Lead of coach Dharies Creencia and team manager Jofer Malveda relied on Bon Quirante (25), Mark Roca (19), David Wrench (12), Prinze Adrian Custodio (11) in downing Santa Rosa City for its second win in six outings.

Sean Michael Sandoval scattered a game-high 35 points for coach JayAr Dichoso Santa Rosa City, which suffered its fourth loss against three wins.
Junthel Namo added 15 points.

Sto Tomas leaned on Gio Lopez;s buzzer beater to give the Mr. Cow-supported squad of coach Raymond Cortuna and manager Arthur Pecana its first win in six matches.

Christian Completo paced Cabuyao City-DenHa Tigers with 10 points.

Cabuyao City, composed mostly of 18 under players, remained winless in seven games.

Romulo Raytos is the tournament commissioner while Marcial Macapanton and Joenald Pacquiao head the technical committe. AA
