THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued a “Notice to Airmen” effective October 8, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m of October 9, 2022, due to Mayon Volcano’s increasing unrest.

With Mayon Volcano now on Alert Level 2, flights have been prohibited from operating 10,000 feet from the surface and advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from the sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

In an advisory, DOST-PHIVOLCS said that an ocular inspection of the summit during an aerial survey Saturday (Oct. 8) morning confirmed the presence of freshly extruded lava at the base of the summit lava dome.

Phivolcs raised the alert level of Mayon Volcano from Alert Level 1 (abnormal) to Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) as this means that there is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to phreatic eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruptions.

The CAAP operates seven airports in the Bicol Region: Bulan Airport, Sorsogon Airport, Daet Airport, Masbate Airport, Naga Airport, Virac Airport, and Bicol International Airport.
