BuCor lauds Comelec resolve to empower PDLs, ensure their access to poll process
THE Bureau of Corrections welcomed the officials of the Commission on Elections led by its Chairman George Erwin Garcia for their unwavering commitment to promote inclusive democracy following the recent conduct of voter education activity for persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
The COMELEC’s information campaign is in line with the upcoming 2025 National and Local Elections, showcasing its resolve to empower PDL voters by ensuring their access to and participation in the electoral process.
In a message by Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. delivered by Head Executive Assistant CTC Supt., Maria Fe Marquez highlighted the importance of the gathering to prepare PDLs in the exercise of their voting rights in the coming elections.
Catapang emphasized that this activity underscores COMELEC’s unwavering commitment to enabling all Filipinos to have a voice, regardless of their circumstances.
“This Voters’ Education Activity transcends mere participation for it embodies the rights to engage, to be well-informed, and to influence the future of our nation,” Catapang added.
For the PDLs, this opportunity is invaluable, Catapang explained, as it instills in them the belief that despite being incarcerated, they remain part of the society.
“At the Bureau of Corrections, we strongly advocate for rehabilitation and reintegration, with education playing a pivotal role in the process. The privilege to vote signifies a significant step towards reclaiming dignity and a sense of belonging. This endeavor not only focuses on understanding the complexities of voting but also on nurturing in PDLs the confidence that they are essential members of our society, capable of contributing to its progress, and that their voices matter,” Catapang said.
There are about 2,140 PDL registered voters at the NBP.
