IN a bid to stop the entry of prohibited items into its prison facilities, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has released a memorandum order requiring personnel to use transparent bags only.

“All BuCor personnel is mandated to use transparent bags in line with the eradication of contrabands, especially in the ‘No Cellphone Policy’ in all BuCor facilities,” BuCor said in an order.

BuCor is an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ). Under the law, the DOJ has administrative supervision over BuCor.

The BuCor prison facilities are: The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, the Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, and Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is set to donate laptop computers to BuCor’s “E-dalaw” program.

The E-dalaw system allows persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) to see their relatives remotely, in line with BuCor’s modern reformation concept.

“This proposal (laptop donation) will be a big help in the goal of the Bucor in combating the PDLs’ homesickness with their families and friends,” BuCor said in a statement.

The ICRC has been donating materials and equipment to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and other prison and penal farms (PPFs).

They recently handed over a “temporary hospital” to the NBP to fulfill their commitment to uphold, promote and protect the healthcare of every PDL.
