The Bureau of Corrections on Friday confirmed the death of convicted drug lord Vicente Sy, one of the inmates who testified against Sen. Leila de Lima.

According to BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag, Sy had a cardiac arrest Thursday.

Prior to his death, Sy was detained at the Philippine Marine Corps BuCor extension facility in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.

“On July 29, New Bilibid Prison doctors from Muntinlupa went to check the PDL (Person deprived of liberty) and was considered to have suffered CVA (stroke). He experienced several seizures while still at Fort Bonifacio but revived,” Chaclag said.

“From the Philippine Marine Corps facility at around 5PM the same day, PDL Sy was brought to NBP Hospital in Muntinlupa for further treatment, management and preparation for outside emergency referral to Ospital ng Muntinlupa.”

“While waiting for available slot for admission at OsMun, PDL Sy experienced another cardiac arrest and succumbed at around 8 PM yesterday, July 29,” Chaclag said in a message.

Sy, one of the high-profile inmates at the NBP, was one of the 13 convicts who turned prosecution witnesses against de Lima.

But Sy revoked his statements that he gave money to de Lima. Atty. Boni Tacardon said Sy confirmed that he never met and gave P500,000 cash to the senator.

De Lima is currently detained at Camp Crame Custodial Facility over drug charges, which she said were “trumped up.”

Sy entered the NBP on December 14, 1999.
