SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go has vowed continued support for solo parents as his team provided assistance to solo parents in Barangay Mintal, Davao City on Wednesday, July 5.

Go is one of the authors and co-sponsors of Republic Act No. 11861, which provides amendments to RA 8972 or the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000.

“Asahan n’yo po ang aking suporta sa Senado sa abot ng aking makakaya sa mga programa at batas na magbibigay ng mas maginhawang buhay sa ating mga solo parents,” said Go through a video message.

“Katulad na lang po sa pagsulong natin sa Solo Parents Act na kung saan karamihan sa kanila ay mga kababaihan po, mga solo parents po,” noted Go.

One of the key amendments under RA 11861 is the provision of an allowance to qualified indigent solo parents to help them sustain the needs of their families. The law recognizes the unique challenges faced by solo parents and ensures they have adequate means to support their children.

Among the other benefits include a 10 percent discount on basic necessities, such as food and micronutrient supplements, diapers, and duly prescribed medicines for solo parents earning less than P250,000 annually. Solo parents are also given priority in the government’s housing and livelihood programs.

Up to 100 solo parents received shirts, vitamins, masks, and snacks from Go’s outreach team. Several beneficiaries also received shoes, mobile phones, and balls for basketball and volleyball.

Go, who is also chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, also offered additional assistance to those in need of hospital care. He urged them to seek the services of the Malasakit Center at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in the city.

The senator initiated the Malasakit Centers program in 2018 and was successful in institutionalizing the program through RA 11463, which he principally sponsored and authored in 2019. The Malasakit Center is a one-stop-shop for medical and financial assistance provided by various government agencies including the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

Go is also pushing for the construction of more Super Health Centers nationwide. DOH has identified strategic locations for the centers which will offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, through which remote diagnosis and treatment of patients is made possible.

Go, as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, also supported the construction of various multipurpose buildings and local roads, rehabilitation of water systems, drainage systems and flood control structures in different barangays throughout the city. He also backed the construction of a 300-bed capacity infectious diseases building for the SPMC and the acquisition of ambulances, in a bid to help improve the quality of public service delivered to his fellow Davaoeños.

“Mga kapwa kong Davaoeños, andirito lang po ako para makapagserbisyo sa inyong lahat sa abot nang aking makakaya. Andirito lang po ang inyong Kuya Bong Go na handa pong tumulong sa inyo,” Go said.
