THE bloody war on drugs by former President Rodrigo Duterte that killed thousands of Filipinos was allegedly a farce and based on a big lie to the Filipino people, former Sen. Leila De Lima said.

De Lima made this assertion based on the new account made by former Davao Death Squad member Arturo Lascañas to investigative news website Vera Files.

“All this time, Duterte has taken the Filipino people for a ride, big time! Ginisa ang bansa sa sarili nitong mantika ng nakaraang administrasyon,” De Lima, jailed for over six years during the Duterte administration, said.

Mr. Duterte made a promise at the start of his administration in 2016 that he will eradicate drugs in six months.

De Lima was chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) that exhaustively investigated the nefarious activities of the so-called Davao Death Squad, where Lascañas was a key witness and whistleblower.

“This explosive revelation from former Davao policeman and self-confessed Davao Death Squad hitman Arturo Lascañas warrants serious and immediate investigation,” she said.

“Hindi na nila ito kayang pagtakpan. Indeed, Truth has a way of finding the light of day,” De Lima added.

Thousands died during the bloody anti-illegal drugs war of the Duterte administration, which is now the subject of investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

During Duterte’s administration, the country withdrew its membership from the ICC.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration is seriously considering rejoining the international criminal tribunal.
