BOC intensifies drive vs illicit vape products; over P5-B seized in 2024
THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) has ramped up its fight against the illicit trade of vape products, announcing a record-breaking P5.07 billion worth of smuggled goods seized in the first 10 months of 2024.
The series of seizures underscores the agency’s commitment to enforcing the Vaporized Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Products Regulation Act (RA 11900) and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863), BOC said in a statement.
BOC officials vowed to further intensify regulatory actions, ensure compliance with import standards, and prosecute individuals behind vape smuggling. Their efforts include rigorous monitoring, inspections, and intelligence-sharing to curb illegal activities.
Recent operations highlight BOC’s success. A vape shop in San Pedro, Laguna, was found with smuggled disposable vapes worth P12.6 million. In Quiapo, Manila, authorities confiscated assorted vape devices and pods valued at P6.475 million.
Further demonstrating its resolve, the BOC condemned 14,100 boxes of forfeited vape products in April 2024, valued at P1.48 billion. This followed the destruction of 19,800 and 8,400 boxes in August 2024, ensuring these products never reach the market.
The Bureau emphasized that dismantling smuggling networks remains a top priority. Enhanced intelligence-sharing and closer coordination with agencies like the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and private stakeholders are key strategies for addressing emerging trends in illicit trade.
BOC’s success reflects a growing momentum to combat smuggling activities. As enforcement capabilities strengthen, the agency vows to remain vigilant in protecting public health and the integrity of lawful trade.
