Bloodletting drive

THROUGHOUT the year, government and private organizations conduct bloodletting activities not only in the Metropolitan Manila area but also across the Philippines.

In fact, those who are fit and well, from the rich and powerful to the poor and lowly, are being called upon to donate blood to help increase the country’s blood reserves.

Admittedly, more and more patients confined in government and and private hospitals from Batanes in the North to Sulu in Mindanao need blood transfusion.

“Kaya kailangang may sapat tayong dugo sa bansa para walang problema ang pamilya ng mga pasyenteng nangangailangan ng dugo,” a government social worker said.

Thus, we laud the Civil Service Commission (CSC), chaired by Karlo Nograles, for calling on the 1.9 million civil servants to participate in this year’s bloodletting drive.

The Sept. 19-21 bloodletting drive is under the auspices of the CSC, in partnership with the Department of Health-Philippine Blood Center (DOH-PBC) and SM Supermalls.

Themed “Dugtong Buhay, Handog ng Lingkod-Bayan,” the nationwide bloodletting campaign is part of this year’s 123rd Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) celebration.

We agree with Nograles when he said that the drive “showcases volunteerism and malasakit sa kapwa among the 1.9 civil servants,” adding “we give so others may live.”

However, CSC authorities were also quick to emphasize that while “we want everyone to participate, (blood) donors will still be screened based on medical guidelines.

In other words, only those who are fit and well will be allowed to donate blood.
