THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-National Capital Region (BJMP-NCR) has intensified its mass scabies treatment and other air-borne diseases to inmates in time for the summer season.

Skin irritations are usually experienced in jail facilities during summer especially those with high congestion rates.

BJMP-NCR director Chief Supt. Clint Russel Tangeres said the first mass scabies treatments were conducted in the two largest facilities – the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory (QCJMD) with 4,000 jail population and Manila City Jail Male Dormitory (MCJMD) with 3,500.

Tangeres said similar medical missions will be conducted in all other jails in Metro Manila.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) helped the bureau during the distribution of medicines and other needs.

On the other hand, the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) joined in the in-house training on the scabies treatment procedure.

Tangeres said all PDLs in QCJMD and MCJMD were given medical attention.

“Lahat sila ay pipilitin natin n mabigyan ng proteksyon,” the jail official assured.

Part of the scabies-care program is the cleaning and disinfection of every cell. PDLs were encouraged to wash their clothes, bed sheets, pillows, and mattresses in separate laundry areas.

In the meantime, newcomer PDLs will be placed in a holding area all subject to disinfection before they are allowed to integrate with the old inmates.

Being the first mass scabies treatment implementer, Tangeres said the Department of Health (DOH) requested to be observers during the PDL scabies treatment to replicate the move to other jail facilities and in other parts of the country.

BJMP spokesperson Supt. Jayrex Bustinera noted that the initiatives help prevent the rise of skin infectious diseases and other ailments in its jail facilities.

In ensuring the well-being of the PDLs, Bustinera cited the ICRC and the Quezon City government for supporting the BJMP’s health and wellness cause with the conduct of the “mass treatment programs.”
