SAYING that they deserved better for risking their lives, Senator Loren Legarda insists on “the need” to give the right compensation to Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) as she pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic has further magnified their importance as one of the country’s frontliners.

Legarda, who recently filed Senate Bill No. 5, said it is high time “we provide a comprehensive set of compensation, incentives, and other benefits to acknowledge the services these health workers render to the Filipino people.”

BHWs render primary health care services in the community after being accredited to function by the local health board in accordance with the guidelines promulgated by the DOH (Department of Health).

“BHWs suffer due to the lack of effective support mechanisms and insufficient funds from the local government units (LGUs). The deplorable state of barangay health programs and services is due to the current shortage of volunteers, the BHWs, whose numbers seem insufficient to address the growing needs of barangays,” Legarda said.

Legarda recognizes BHWs as “true heroes” of our health delivery system and has continuously repeated her call to address this concern.

“The national health care delivery system will falter at the grassroots without the dedication and hard work of barangay health workers,” Legarda added.
