JAEN, Nueva Ecija – A 63-year-old incumbent barangay councilor (kagawad) was peppered with bullets on Monday night and rushed to a nearby hospital to treat seven gunshot wounds in different parts of the body.

Provincial Police Information Chief Lt. Franklin Sindac identified the wounded barangay kagawad as Marianito Herminigildo, of Bgy. Malabon Kaingin.

“Buhay po nasa ICU (intensive care unit) nakakausap naman, walang vital organ na tinamaan sa seven gun shots na tumama,” Sindac told the Journal Group in his Viber message.

“2009 biktima na rin siya ng pamamaril at inuugnay niya sa plano niyang ‘pagtakbo’ ng kapitan ang pamamaril. Ongoing pa rin po investigation to look into possible motives maliban sa sinasabi mismo ng biktima,” added Sindac.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor-elect and outgoing Councilor Atty. Silvestre C. Austria, son of reelected Mayor Sylvia C. Austria, confirmed that the wounded kagawad is one of their known political supporters.

“Opo sa atin po iyan (Herminigildo). Strike 2 after the elections po, yung una ay yung sa Bgy. Niyugan po,” said Austria in his text message to this reporter, referring to Angeles Arceo, another supporter of their camp who was also wounded during an earlier gun attack last May 24.

Initial investigation showed Herminigildo was driving his e-bike at 6:45 p.m. when two men aboard a Yamaha MIO motorcycle suddenly appeared and, upon stopping, shot him several times in different parts of the body before fleeing towards the direction of Sta. Rosa town.

Sindac said the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is now being treated for several gunshot wounds.

Police are still conducting dragnet operations for possible identification and arrest of the suspects.
