A DYNAMITE explosion killed four persons including a barangay captain in Balud, Masbate and injured seven others on Monday afternoon, Police Regional Office 5 (PRO5) director, Brigadier General Jonnel C. Estomo said.

Killed in the blast were Lina Recto, chairman of Bgy. Pajo in Balud, Mac-mac de la Cruz, Ronely Bulala and Aisa Sese. Most of the victims were badly burned.

Wounded and taken to the Balud Municipal Hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds and burns were John Paul Badahos,12; Chris Bagaipo,7; Ivan Mahilum,20; Junvin Badahos,24; Tessie Badahos,59; Leonard Amistoso,42; and Ruel Hentica,26.

Estomo said initial investigation showed that a stockpile of dynamites allegedly being used in illegal fishing activities exploded inside the house of the village chief around 1:15 p.m. Monday.

The house of the barangay captain was badly damaged as a result of the blast.

Estomo condoled with the families of the blast victims and said it should serve as a lesson for all local residents not to engage in dynamite fishing.

“Dynamite fishing not only can kill or maim a person but worse, it badly damages our aquatic resources,” he said.

“Wag ninyong ipilit ang bawal kung mahal ninyo ang inyong mga buhay at kapamilya. Mas piliin sana ninyong gumawa ng tama at naaayon sa ating batas,” Brig. Gen. Estomo said.
