EVER since promising young actor Beaver Magtalas made his big screen debut in Italian director Paolo Bertola’s sci-fi action fantasy film, ‘Genius Teens’ (2022), Beaver already expressed his desire to become a versatile and serious actor.

Beaver gets his first lead role in the youth-oriented romantic-comedy, ‘When Magic Hurts,’ to be shown this April and megged by director Gabby Ramos.

Filming immediately commenced in September last year, after Magic Hurts was announced to be made. Cast and crew went to Atok, Benguet, a beautiful locale for When Magic Hurts.

“I took all the interior shots in Atok, Benguet, kasi binagyo kami,” Direk Gabby recalled. “Aside from the leads, all the major stars – Claudine Barretto, Dennis Padilla –were already in Benguet.

We spent three days in Beguio and seven days in Benguet.

“Kaya siya nagtagal, hinintay ko na mag-bloom ang flowers sa Benguet. In December and January, bumalik kami to continue shooting. May roses na. We spent around 20 days shooting the entire film.”

Direk Gabby first worked with Beaver in Roommate, direk’s Facebook serye. “His work here in ‘When Magic Hurts’ is a lot better,” disclosed the director. “Nag-mature ang acting niya. He matured a lot. His connection with the other artists, mas nararamdaman ko na.”

It will be remembered that when the film first became known as the first big screen partnership of Beaver and Mutya Orquia in September last year, Magic Hurts became its first title.

However, former FDCP (Film Development Council of the Philippines) chair Liza Diño talked to them and suggested to change the title . Hence, When Magic Hurts became its official title, with story and concept by Angel Gwenavere and Jerome Baguio as co-writer.

Even if his three leads – Beaver, Mutya and Maxine Trinidad – are all young, Direk Gabby is truly please that his actors were all professional throughout the filming.

“Ang problema kasi sa acting, it’s not really how good you act,” the director explained. “It’s really how good you can act given the temperature na 9 or 10 degrees. Sa taas namin, pati ‘yung hangin, mas malamig.

“But with the professionalism of my young actors, my work is half finished na with that pa lang.”

Beaver is pleased that he was given a new opportunity to act again on the big screen. “We were given a look-test before we got our roles officially,” Beaver offered. “I want to thank Direk Gabby for this opportunity

“I’ve seen how passionate Direk Gabby was from the time he gathered us to inform us about this film. I admire how much he brings out 100 percent from the actors. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

In When Magic Hurts, Beaver plays Ernest Buenaventura, a hobbyist photographer who captures scenic landscapes and portraits. He is a loving son to his parents and a caring brother to his older sister.

The romance-comedy drama also stars veteran actors including Claudine Barretto, Dennis Padilla, Soliman Cruz, Angelica Jones, Archie Adamos, Pantene Palanca and Aileen Papin.

Young stars who are included in the cast are Julian Roxas, Mohaira Sanama, Cassie Kim, Denna Bautista and Bluemark Roces.
