AFTER assuming the top political post of the land on June 30, President Marcos is expected to expound on his “program of action” in his maiden state-of-the-nation address (SONA).

President Marcos delivers his first SONA on July 5 before the joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City.

A yearly undertaking, SONA is a constitutional obligation of the President wherein he reports on the status of the country, unveils the government agenda for the coming year.

In the SONA, the Chief Executive is expected to urge Congress, the first rampart of democracy in the Philippines, to pass the government’s proposed legislative measures.

Marcos announced that “we are presently drawing up a comprehensive, all inclusive plan for economic transformation,” assuring the Filipino people that “we will build back better.”

Records show that the 64-year-old Marcos makes his maiden SONA 56 years after his father, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, delivered his first SONA on Jan. 24, 1966.

In his well-applauded inaugural address last Thursday, the new President called on the people to help the country recover from the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marcos said we should work in unison, admitting that the coming months would be “rough,” adding “the immediate months will be rough but I will walk that road with you.”

In the view of various quarters, Mr. Marcos’ call for unity will serve as a cue for all of us, including the ordinary citizens, to set aside our differences for the sake of the nation.

Kalimutan muna natin ang pulitika at pagtulungan nating bigyang solusyon ang mga mabibigat nating problema kasi matagal pa naman ang susunod na eleksyon sa bansa.
