BATAAN 2nd District Rep. Abet Garcia on Friday announced that the Senate has approved on second reading the Special Defense Economic Zone (SpeDEZ) Act or House Bill 7764.

The measure aims to boost the country’s defense and security capabilities.

Garcia issued the announcement in the wake of more aggressive posture by China for its repeated incursion into the territorial waters of the country in the past several months.

According to the Bataan solon, the SpeDEZ Act, if finally becomes into law, will attract private sector investments in defense-related industries and generate more employment.

“Pasado na po sa ikalawang pagbasa sa Senado ang Special Defense Economic Zone (SpeDEZ) Act na iniakda at inisponsoran ni Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, na isinusulong din ng inyong lingkod katuwang si Cong. Gila Garcia sa Mababang Kapulungan, Garcia said.

He added that the SpeDEZ Act seeks to establish a special economic zone in Camp Gen. Antonio Luna in Bgy. Lamao, Limay, where private investors can engage in defense, military, law enforcement, advanced technologies, information and communication, research and development, and other related industries.

Garcia is the principal author of the bill, along with Bataan 3rd district Rep. Gila Garcia.
