Barangay, SK polls

THE Filipino people, notably the electorate, now want to know whether Congress is postponing the December 5 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKEs).

What’s certain is that the government, through its offices and agencies across the country, needs enough money to address the many needs of the burgeoning population.

Those seeking to postpone the two polls said the election budget could be diverted to other projects, such as relief or financial assistance to people affected by the pandemic.

Without doubt, the P8-billion budget for the forthcoming political exercises will go a long way in meeting the mushrooming needs of the more than 110 million Filipinos.

Note that many of the country’s business establishments, including the big ones in the metropolis and elsewhere, remain closed due to the acute shortage of capital and consumers.

“Hindi natin sila masisisi kung bakit hanggang sa ngayon ay sarado pa sila dahil di pa nga umaarangkada ang ekonomiya pagkatapos ng dalawang taong pandemya,” a shop owner said.

That’s why more and more people, particularly the poorest of the poor, now want the two-chamber Congress to reset the twin elections to late next year or early 2024.

We share the view of well-meaning Filipinos, like the barangay officials themselves, that the public ought to know now whether the twin polls will push through or not.

“Kasi dapat matigil na ang mga maiinit na diskusyon kung matutuloy o hindi ang nakatakdang barangay at SK elections sa Disyembre 5,” according to a graduating village chair.

We agree!
