BALANGA CITY, Bataan–Illegal fishers from Bulacan and Pampanga are encroaching the waters off Balanga City in their illegal fishing, thus prompting the city council to craft a law to totally ban the use of Dragon Bubu net trap along the coastal area here.

To prevent the continued destruction of the livelihood of thousands of fishermen here, Councilor Benjie Meriño, chair of the City’s Committee on Agriculture, and Peace and Order, said that the council, thru Vice mayor Vianca Venzon Gozon, will request Mayor Francis Garcia to prohibit the sale, purchase, manufacture and entry of Dragon Bubu net trap in Balanga.

Merino said violators of the ordinance will be fined aside from confiscating the banned fish trap.

Meriño pointed out that the continued usa of Dragon Bubu net traps will catch all fishes, including very small fingerlings, small crabs, shrimps and other small fishes that will enter the traps.

Merińo said that most of those using net traps are fishermen from Pampanga and Bulacan.

Although Balanga has a vast coastal area, using such illegal net traps will severely affect the livelihood of fishermen here as thousands depend on fishing for their livelihood.

He added that they will first conduct public consultation and hearings before passing an ordinance that will completely ban the net traps.
