PEOPLE acknowledge that majority of the people, notably the poorest of the poor in the countryside and elsewhere, are shocked by the steady rise in the costs of goods and services.

This, despite the fact that the earning and purchasing capacities of members of the working class, the creator of wealth in society, remain stagnant due to various reasons.

These reasons include the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has killed millions of people across the globe, and the sorry state of the Philippine economy.

But the public can understand why concerned government authorities cannot just grant substantial wage adjustments to workers at this time of “economic hardship.”

“Kapag ginawa ito ng gobyerno ay baka magkaroon pa ng ‘massive retrenchment’ sa bansa,” according to a well-meaning local government official.

Battered by the crippling pandemic, the still struggling domestic economy now needs to be nursed back to health by the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

With the 64-year-old Marcos in Malacanang, Filipinos expect the government to draw the poor, who comprise the bulk of the population, into the social mainstream.

Yes, the government, which ends at 12 noon on June 30, 2028, ought to come up with highly-effective pieces of legislation aimed at enhancing the living conditions of the people.

Due to extreme poverty and the high prices of goods and services, more and more Filipinos now find it difficult to eat three times a day, according to a lady barangay official.

The prices of almost all commodities, particularly food products, continue to increase beyond the reach of ordinary workers in the government and the private sector.

Sa harap ng mga kinakaharap nating problema, kabilang na ang bagsak na ekonomiya, ang kailangan ay i-balance ng gobyerno ang interest ng labor at management.
