Ateneo to train in Japan
THE build-up begins for next month’s UAAP volleyball tournaments as the Ateneo men’s and women’s teams have started their training camp in Japan.
It has been the first time in five years that the Blue Eagles went overseas training in Japan and the third since 2019.
The 2019 camp was a fruitful one for Ateneo as it was able to capture its third and most recent women’s championship behind Bea De Leon, Pauline Gaston, Maddie Madayag and Kat Tolentino.
The Blue Eagles went back to the Land of the Rising Sun the following year as they gird up for their back-to-back title run. Season 82, however, was scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ateneo’s women’s and men’s teams opened their camp with friendly matches with Kobe Shinwa University.
With Brazilian Sergio Veloso at the helm for the second straight season, the Blue Eagles will be bannered by Lyann de Guzman, AC Miner, Sobe Buena and Zel Tsunashima.
Ateneo placed fifth in a preseason tournament won by UAAP holders National University last November.
