Ate Sarah Discaya suspends teammate Sia over ‘bad joke’
PASIG CITY — Team Kaya This headed by mayoral candidate Ate Sarah Discaya has suspended their congressional bet Atty. Christian Sia for three days over his inadvertent misogynistic joke and was conspicuously absent on their Saturday miting de avance in Barangay Pineda.
Sia’s suspension by Team Kaya This came on the heels on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) issuance of a show cause order tor Sia to explain why he should not be charged with an election offense after making a vulgar joke during a campaign sortie.
“Team Kaya This has suspended Atty. Ian Sia for three days following the flak on his statement during a recent campaign sortie. He cannot attend the party’s go activities while he is suspended. I have advised Atty. Sia to use the time to self-reflect and get better. Tao lang naman tayo na nagkakamali,” Discaya told People’s Journal in an ambush interview on her way to Team KayaThis’ miting de avance.
The event drew a mammoth crowd which was quite unexpected for a non-traditional candidate, a successful businesswoman who came from humble beginnings and facing a perceived political Goliath.
“Ate Sarah” (with an H, as in honesty, her supporters say) envisions to transform Pasig into a neo-cosmopolitan smart city that harnesses advanced technology to raise its people’s quality of life.
Proving her fair and firm leadership, Discaya took the issue of Sia’s vulgar joke by the horn.
“I hope this experience will teach him to be more careful in the future, no matter his intentions. At this time, when even the slightest joke can be taken out of context, it is best to be cautious. Nag-usap kami, pinakinggan ko ang kanyang saloobin. Sinabi ko din sa kanya kung saan siya nagkulang. Inamin naman niya na siya ay nagkamali. Tinanggap naman niya ang consequence ng kanyang pagkakamali,” Discaya stressed.
As every mistake serves as a learning experience, Discaya vowed it will never happen again.
“Aking tinitiyak na nandito kami para sa pagbangon ni Atty. Sia. Sa isang pamilya, hindi maiiwasan ang pagkakamali pero hindi dapat talikuran ang isa’t-isa. We need to embrace each other’s humanity and work on becoming better people,” Discaya concluded.
Signed by Comelec Task Force Safe head Sonia Bea Wee-Lozada, the show-cause order said Sia’s public utterances during a recent campaign rally constituted a possible violation of Comelec Resolution No. 11116, which provides guidelines for the May 12 elections.
The poll body cited his remarks for discrimination against women and gender-based harassment, which, under the resolution, are treated as an election offense.
This could lead to Sia’s imprisonment of up to six years without probation, perpetual disqualification from holding public office, and deprivation of the right to vote…
