AN armed member of a notorious “Akyat-Bahay Gang” operating in some parts of the Davao region was killed in a gunbattle with policemen who tried to arrest him in Davao City on Tuesday morning, Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 Director Brigadier General Benjamin H. Silo Jr. said yesterday.

The suspect, a 30-year-old resident of the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte, sustained a gunshot wound in the body and died while being taken to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, the official said.

According to Silo, intelligence operatives of the Davao City Police Office were conducting a covert operation in Purok 3 just beside the gated Aspen Heights Subdivision in Barangay Communal in Buhangin District past 12 a.m. Tuesday when they spotted the suspect with a backpack jumping from the concrete fence while carrying a backpack.

When the officers accosted the suspicious-looking person, they were met with gunfire, prompting them to retaliate, hitting the suspect.

A mobile car rushed the wounded suspect to the SPMC, where an attending physician declared him dead upon arrival.

Police recovered a chamber-loaded caliber .45 semi-automatic pistol with a magazine containing two live ammunition, P5,750 in different denominations, three plastic sachets containing an estimated P3,500 worth of shabu, a glass tooter, and a lighter.

The official also announced the arrest of the 7th most “wanted person” (MWP) in Panabo City in Davao del Norte from Bgy. Cagangohan.

He said that local policemen arrested the suspect, the subject of a warrant of arrest for homicide issued by Judge Carmel Grado of the Panabo City Regional Trial Court Branch 34 on December 15, 2021.

A P120,000 bail was recommended for the temporary liberty of the accused, Silo said.
