DEPUTY Speaker Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. today said the people, by and large, recognize and appreciate the “record accomplishments of the House of Representatives under the stewardship of Speaker Martin Romualdez.”

“I think this is largely the reason behind the high public approval ratings of the Speaker, besides his strong but compassionate leadership,” Gonzales, who represents Pampanga’s third district, said.

He said the public is also cognizant of the “unconditional support” the Speaker has committed to the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. (PBBM).

“We in the House have approved majority of the administration’s priority measures, starting with the 2023 national budget. The House is the chamber that principally allocates the budget, and we hope that the people feel the impact and benefits of projects, programs, and activities we fund in the national spending program,” he stressed.

Gonzales, who has proposed certain amendments to the Constitution’s “restrictive” economic provisions, added that he believes the Speaker’s high approval marks also reflect large public support for the House constitutional reform initiative.

“I think there is sizable public backing for our initiative that is focused on changing the language of the economic provisions so there would be flexibility in attracting more foreign capital that would create more income and job opportunities for our people,” he said.

In the latest Tugon ng Masa first quarter 2023 survey of Octa Research, President Marcos Jr. had a trust rating of 83%, Vice President Sara Duterte, 87%; Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, 50%; Speaker Romualdez, 55%; and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, 39%.

The same survey showed that 80% of adult Filipinos were satisfied with the performance of President Marcos, 84% for VP Duterte, 53% for Zubiri, 59% for Speaker Romualdez, and 41% for Gesmundo.

Among the officials covered by the survey, Romualdez gained the biggest increase in trust rating – +17 compared to the October 2022 survey. He likewise made the highest leap in performance – +15.

Octa Research noted that Romualdez’s “approval for (his) performance has tremendously increased in all geographical areas and socio-economic classes.”

The Speaker also had a 51% approval rating in the newest Pulse Asia survey and a “very good” +56 net satisfaction mark in the latest Social Weather Stations poll.
