A STEPPED-UP anti-criminality campaign by the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group resulted in the arrest of an incumbent Sangguniang Kabataan chairman and 16 other wanted persons, PNP-CIDG director Maj. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro said yesterday.

In a report to PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, the official identified the arrested public official as Rey Boncao, the SK chairman of Bgy. Upper Dioyo in Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental.

Members of the CIDG, with the help of the local police and the Army, on Wednesday arrested the suspect in his house on the strength of a search warrant for illegal possession of firearms issued by the Sapang Dalaga-Concepcion 2nd Municipal Circuit Trial Court.

Recovered during the raid were a fragmentation grenade, an improvised M-16-type 12-gauge shotgun with a steel magazine containing four live ammunition and a cal. .38 revolver..

Ferro said they received information that the suspect is a member of the NPA Guerrilla Front Sendong Committee involved in gunrunning, gun-for-hire, arson, extortion and other illegal activities in several parts of Misamis Occidental and the nearby provinces.

He added that the suspect was also accused of involvement in a series of attacks on government troops in the province and the burning of heavy equipment being used to build roads in Misamis Occidental.

The suspect is facing non-bailable charges for illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

The other suspects were arrested in a series of operations in Calabarzon, Bicol, Central Luzon and the Visayas regions.
