Acidre for F-16 fighter jets acquisition
HOUSE Assistant Majority Leader Tingog Party-list Representative Jude Acidrebhas emphasized the importance of bolstering the country’s defense capabilities through such modernization efforts.
This is the reason why Acidre is giving his full support to Philippines’ plan to acquire 20 brand-new F-16 fighter jets from the United States (US).
“Definitely. Sa tagal na ng modernization plan hindi na bago ito at suportado po natin ang anomang hakbang na ginagawa ng ating Sandatahang Lakas, ng ating pamahalaan, at ng administrasyon na palakasin ang ating defense capability,” said Acidre, chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs.
The proposed acquisition is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ ongoing modernization program, aiming to enhance territorial defense and address various security challenges.
Acidre highlighted the broader implications of strengthening military assets:
The U.S. State Department recently approved the potential sale of 20 F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines, a deal estimated at $5.58 billion. This move aligns with the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its air force and improve interoperability with allied nations.
Acidre underscored the significance of such acquisitions in safeguarding national territory and ensuring the safety of Filipino citizens:
The Department of National Defense has indicated plans to seek a long-term loan from the U.S. to finance this acquisition, reflecting the administration’s commitment to enhancing defense capabilities despite budgetary constraints.
Acidre also pointed out the multifaceted role of the armed forces, extending beyond traditional defense.
“Hindi po ito kakaiba at alam naman ho natin… hindi sa usaping seguridad kahit sa usapin ng disaster response ay malaki po ang role ng ating Sandatahang Lakas,” he said.
