A welcome move
THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has launched a nationwide program aimed at ensuring the health of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
In the view of many, it is, without doubt, the duty of the government to ensure the well-being of people, men and women, now languishing in detention facilities.
Like the rest of the Filipino people, PDLs are still human beings. “Kahit mga nakakulong yan, mga tao pa rin sila na nangangailangan ng kalinga,” said an elderly.
That’s why we commend the BJMP leadership for embarking on an extensive scabies mass treatment for PDLs.
Called “Oplan Alis Scabies 2024,” the 19-day medical program started on August 27 (Tuesday) at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory.
The program, which ends on September 14 (Saturday), aims to eradicate the skin disease afflicting PDLs in BJMP facilities.
Medical authorities said that PDLs are prone to severe itching, disruption of sleep and other health issues.
Earlier, many PDLs in Metropolitan Manila were reported afflicted with boils, scabies and other skin ailments due to extreme heat.
And it is heartening that BJMP implements various medical and safety measures in all detention facilities under its supervision.
BJMP deserves the support of the public as exerts its best efforts to make PDLs’ condition less uncomfortable.
