A welcome development

THE government of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. deserves the support of the public as it exerts its best efforts to speed up the tempo of rural development.

These all-out government efforts are geared at making highly-productive the countryside, where majority of the poor, mostly farmers, fishermen and laborers, live and work.

This, the government, through the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), will do by focusing on improving connectivity in the rural areas.

This is to support the growing number of ICT (information and communications technology) jobs outside Metropolitan Manila, the country’s premier region.

“With the advances…brought about by the digital revolution, the ratio of digital jobs in provinces is expected to increase to more than half a million by 2028,” ayon sa DICT.

“Noon, 80% ng digital jobs are in Metropolitan Manila and 20% (ang) pinaghati-hatian sa probinsya. Now, we are almost reaching a 50-50 mark,” said DICT Undersecretary Jocelle Batapa-Sigue.

By 2028, we will probably have 55% of the additional 1.2 million digital jobs “ang madadagdag sa ating current number at matatagpuan sa mga probinsiya,” she added.

Truth is, the increasing number of digital jobs in the countryside is seen to hasten the socio-economic development of this Southeast Asian nation of more than 110 million people.

Without doubt, it’s a welcome development as the government tries to uplift the living conditions of the people, particularly the poorest of the poor in the rural communities.
