THE vast majority of the members of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) are supporting the UniTeam tandem of presidential candidate former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) and his running mate, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) vice presidential bet Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

No less than than LMP President and Narvacan, Ilocos Sur Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson, Sr. gave this assessment Tuesday night, during the group’s 2022 General assembly. Marcos and Duterte served as their guests at the event.

“Sila (LMP mayors) ang pinapakinggan ko. I just follow the majority, and the majority of them are supporting BBM. Basta sinusunod ko lang ‘yung mga mayors, majority of them are supporting BBM and Sara,” Singson said in an ambush interview on the sidelines of the event held at Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City.

Singson said that out of the 1,480 LMP mayor-members, around 80 percent support the UniTeam duo. That translates to just under 1,200 of the mayors.

“Ako wala akong pinipil–sumusunod lang ako sa majority…yes majority of the mayors are [for] BBM-Sara. Tsaka ‘yung survey, maski saang survey, lamang na lamang na more than 50 percent…First time na nakita ko tao ang gumagalaw, puro volunteers. Pambihira ‘yung ganun,” Singson said.

So astonished was the Narvacan mayor of the ground support for BBM-Sara that he said the May 2022 elections could produce a majority president for the Philippines as opposed to a president who won via plurality of votes.

“Sabi ko nga kanina–magiging majority president, ngayon lang. Ever since wala tayong majority president, puro – like for example si President Duterte malakas pero 16 million lang nakuha niya at 25 million ‘yung boboto. Pero this one, more than 50 percent na. Lahat naman ng survey ganun eh,” Singson said.

The LMP general assembly was one of the few events in the ongoing campaign that Marcos and Duterte attended together physically.

This showed the importance that the two gave for the local chief executives, which they identify with given their respective poltical careers.

“Importante yan (support ng mayors). Lahat ng politician umaasa sa mga…mayors. sila nakakaalam talaga,” Singson said.
