EIGHTY people on Friday were injured in a riot that occurred inside a jail facility in San Mateo, Rizal.

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesperson Jail Chief Insp. Jayrex Bustinera said among those hurt were 60 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and 20 members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

The 80 sustained minor injuries, the jail official said.

According to Bustinera, seven PDLs started a noise barrage inside the prison.

The inmates were allegedly opposing the cashless system in the detention center.

The PDLs blocked the entry of food and began destroying the facilities.

Jail officers forced the unruly inmates to stop until the riot ensued.

BJMP personnel, and members of the Philippine National Police and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office- San Mateo worked together to diffuse the situation.

Bustinera urged the PDLs not to believe on fake news.

The jail official said those injured were given prompt medical attention and are now recovering.
