8 media posers nabbed for ‘perya’ extortion in Calamba
CALAMBA Police operatives nabbed eight suspects pretending to be media members for robbery-extortion activities victimizing “peryahan” (carnivals) in an entrapment operation in Barangay Parian, Calamba City, Laguna, Sunday, July 18, 2022.
Calamba City Police Chief P/Lt. Col. Arnel Pagulayan said the arrested suspects reportedly introduced themselves as “media practitioners” in different perya outlets, mostly from Rizal province.
Recently, the suspects were also arrested in the same offense in Victoria, Tarlac, for demanding money from the operators of peryahan.
“Ang mga suspects ay gumagamit din ng nga fictitious names sa kanilang modus operandi,” said Pagulayan.
Police also confiscated the suspects’ different identification cards used for extortion activities.
Meanwhile, three media organizations in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) belonging to Police Regional Office IVA (PRO IVA), Camp Vicente Lim Press Corps (CVLPC), and Calamba City Press Corps stated that the suspects were not “legitimate” members of the media or practitioners.
“Ang matindi nito ginagamit pa ang pangalan ni Regional Director P/Brig. Gen. Antonio Yarra sa kanilang extortion activities,” Pagulayan added.
