OVER 60 violators of the Comelec-imposed gun ban in Metro Manila have been apprehended by agents of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) since last January 12 to date, NCRPO director, Brigadier General Anthony A. Aberin said.

The official said the arrests were made amid their strict enforcement of the prohibition on the unauthorized carrying of firearms and other deadly weapons in the metropolis as part of their full-swing efforts to ensure a smooth and orderly May 12 National and Local Elections as ordered by Philippine National Police chief, General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil.

Brig. Gen. Aberin said that since January 12, they have also confiscated 60 firearms and explosives from the apprehended gun ban violators.

He said that to ensure the safety and security of the public in the metropolis, they have also established more checkpoints in strategic parts of Metro Manila to arrest the presence of illegal guns and weapons that could be used to commit criminality or as an ‘instrument of violence’ during the mid-term polls.

The NCRPO director said that since the start of the nationwide gun ban, they have conducted 2,164 Comelec-supervised checkpoints in the metropolis to curb illegal activities.

Brig. Gen. Aberin said the five NCRPO districts have been instrumental in these achievements.

He added that the Manila Police District headed by Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas C. Ibay seized 24 illegal firearms during the period while the Southern Police District under Brig. Gen. Manuel J. Abrugena recorded two firearms seized during checkpoints.

“Collectively, these results reflect the NCRPO’s unified approach to protecting the integrity of the elections and fostering public trust in the electoral process,” the official said.

Brig. Gen. Aberin has reminded NCRPO personnel manning gun ban checkpoints to strictly adhere to their Police Operational Procedures and ensure that the rights of the citizens will always be observed and protected.

The Commission on Elections on Monday said that a total of 225 gun ban offenders, two of them foreigners have been arrested nationwide since January 12. Seized from the violators were 228 firearms and explosives and over 1,000 rounds of assorted live ammunition.
