5 Chinese nabbed over SIM scam in Pasay
FIVE Chinese nationals involved in the illegal sale of pre-registered Subscriber Identity Module or SIM cards to foreigners in Metro Manila were arrested in a buy-bust in Pasay City.
Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director, Brigadier General Nicolas D. Torre III yesterday said the suspects were apprehended by members of the PNP-CIDG Detective Special Operations Unit during a sting at the 8th floor of 11-B Ortigas Street on Monday in Baclaran, Pasay City.
He said that the operation stemmed from intelligence reports that a crime group led by some foreigners engaged in the prohibited sale of pre-registered SIM cards was monitored to be holding office in a Baclaran building.
“These SIM cards were allegedly being used to commit various criminal activities, including love scams, telecommunications fraud, and other serious crimes,” Brig. Gen. Torre said.
Recovered during the operation were hundreds of pre-registered SIM cards, credit cards, blank cards with black magnetic strips, text blaster units, and the marked money paid by an undercover officer to one of the suspects.
The suspects were charged with violation of Republic Act 11934 or the SIM Registration Act, RA 8484 or the Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998 and RA 12010 or the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act in relation to RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
